Living Expenses

The increase in inflation rates in the world and Turkey also affects the living expenses of university students. The increase in dormitory/housing rents, gasoline prices, transportation fees and product prices in grocery stores have led to an increase in living expenses. However, living expenses in Turkey are quite affordable compared to the US and European countries. This comparison covers the costs of education, accommodation, transportation, food, entertainment, health and shopping. Being a university student in Turkey offers students more financially viable options due to lower higher education and living expenses. The average cost of living for a student living in Turkey is 300-350 dollars. Of course, this amount may vary according to the spending habits of individuals.

Accommodation

Students have different accommodation options, such as dormitories, houses or apartments. Allocating 50-350 dollars from your budget for accommodation costs will provide you with the opportunity to stay comfortably. The average accommodation cost of 150-200 dollars varies depending on the type of accommodation and location you prefer.

Transportation

There are different options for transportation, such as public transportation, metro, metrobus, minibus, dolmus, and tram. Discounted ticket fees are applied for students. These fares are valid for city public transportation and intercity trains. You can also minimize your transportation costs by purchasing a monthly pass (subscription). You can also use taxis or bicycles for short distances. The monthly fee for public transportation is between 5-7 dollars.

Nutrition

For nutrition, there are options such as university and dormitory cafeterias or restaurants. In general, university dining hall fees are very affordable and healthy. Average prices in restaurants vary between 3-10 dollars. Apart from this, public markets are organized once a week. In these markets, you can meet your vegetable, fruit and many other needs at affordable prices.

Entertainment

There are entertainment venues in Turkey that will appeal to all segments and tastes. In particular, you can have fun at many events and parties organized by the student communities of universities. These events are usually free of charge or subject to nominal ticket prices. Apart from this, you will be able to find affordable entertainment venues, especially in cities with plenty of students. Although the cost of entertainment varies as it is much more dependent on the individual, the average monthly entertainment cost is around 50 dollars.

Health

There are two health insurance options for international students. Private policies range from $40-45 per year and offer free services at contracted hospitals within limits specified in the policy. General Health Insurance is $130 per year. With this insurance, you can receive free services in all public hospitals, but you may have to pay co-payments in private hospitals. It is important to obtain a copy of your policy in English and read the clauses carefully.

Shopping

There are different options for shopping, such as big markets, small shops or markets. All these expenses may vary according to the student’s living conditions and preferences. However, since Turkey is an agricultural country, it grows many of its own products. In this way, you can have natural, fresh and cheap products. In addition, since it is developed in the production of garment products, you can buy clothing products at affordable prices.
