Compulsory education starts at the age of 6 and compulsory basic education is 12 years in Turkey. Therefore, a child starts compulsory education at the age of 6 and graduates at the age of 18. The first four years are primary education, followed by four years of secondary education and four years of high school education. The first 12 years of education are compulsory for everyone and are provided free of charge by the state.
